Many of you know my in-laws Jim & Joyce Smiley. Yesterday, Jim asked me to preach her funeral. I was gathering my thoughts and memories of Joyce's life and I wondered if any of you would like to share.
If you have a story or memory or thought about Joyce's life, please leave a comment. I'd love to tell a couple of your stories.

Joyce and I met at ISU. Those who student taught for 12 weeks in 6 week increments had real problems with housing as it was set up in 9 week stints. Our house mother had problems keeping up with our goings on and we often invited our misplaced girlfriends a bed...illegally I might add. Joyce was one on those cases. The thing that amazed us about Joyce was her hair. She looked exactly the same when she woke as when she had gone to bed....not a hair out of place! We were all jealous! Joyce and I were friends, raising our kids, camping, sewing, shopping, playing cards for years after. A wonderful woman will always have a special place in my heart.
a lot of memories of joyce and the smileys are flooding in.
it all started this morning when the choir was singing...joyce was supposed to be on those risers. that's one memory i have of her...a constant in the choir.
lots and lots of memories of christmas productions at ECC, especially in the old building. those were the days...joyce as jim's sidekick in a couple of shows, and joyce in those little black satin slippers she wore in the tree (come on old LCTers - you know what i'm talkin' about :)
then there's joyce, the mom of three girls, and mother in law to 3quirky boys. she took it all in stride, even when those quirky boys were shooting potato cannons in the backyard.
joyce, the teacher. my how she loved to teach. she gave me advice on how to teach merci to read when she was very, very little. how thankful i am for that. i now have a daughter who is a forever lover of books.
finally, joyce leaves a legacy that cannot be denied. dragging Dude to church with her early on and then teaching her girls about Jesus. what a part she has played in the spiritual condition of her children and of their children.
there are many more memories, but those are the things that came to my mind right away. thanks for giving me the opportunity to share.
love to you all.

I met Joyce when she was my teaching assistant at Northpoint School. Joyce was a wonderful TA who was so anxious to find a teaching job when she worked with me. She was absolutely wonderful with the kids and they enjoyed working with her, but I think Joyce enjoyed working with the kids more! She was so delighted when she finally got a classroom of her own!
Joyce always brought fruit she dehydrated to school for a snack for us during planning times. She got me to go out and buy a food dehydrator so I could have dehydrated fruit at home and eat healthy every day! She was so pleased when I told her about the purchase I made!
Joyce was also famous for bringing a bottle of ketchup to school with her when she brought her lunch. She LOVED ketchup on almost EVERYTHING and we used to tease her about it all the time! I never knew anyoe who loved ketchup as much as she did!
Joyce was a treasure to work with and I am glad I had the opportunity to know her and work with her.
